  1. Hibernihilum - Chthonocheiros EP

HIBERNIHILUMHibernihilum is a young band from Germoney. Well, they were together since 2007, that couldn’t be old. So guess what, we got here a copy of the band’s most recent work called ‘Chthonocheiros’. Sure thing: these guys were fond of using oh so long hard to understand names! The said EP is about 21 minutes long, and musically, these guys try to play Black Metal. OK, no offense if I said “try to play Black Metal”, because oddly enough, this is not Black Metal and hard to call it a mixbag either. So I don’t know what to call it, if you know what I mean, haha…

  2. FOR RUIN - Last Light CD

FOR RUIN LAST LIGHT REVIEWJust when you thought of reviewing music coming from other countries, comes FOR RUIN which is hailing from Ireland. These guys might be sounding different from other acts in that country. I’m not talking about Primordial, or that kind of stuff. They are literally Melodic Black Metal mixed with elements of Thrash, NWOBHM and Death Metal. Seems to be an odd combination for purists, but what the hell. The vocals alone is a big ‘no’ for this style - but once again, who cares! As I think the band likes to showcase their guitarist’s talent. Oh sure, the guy got some licks and constantly changing those from time to time.

  3. PARADISE LOST - Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us (Gothic)

PARADISE LOSTThere’s a handful of Doom Metal (gothic?) veterans that lasted this long and still knows their game. Yes, Paradise Lost is still around and they got a new album called “Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us”. This doesn’t sound like a rehashed album. The vocals sounds like a sell-out Metallica and the growling might or might not work to some.

  4. MARDUK - Wormwood CD (Black Metal)

MARDUK WORMWOODSwedish Black Metal veterans, Marduk, returned this 2009 with a new album called “Wormwood”. I’ve never been so excited about this release since most of the recent releases were so bland and tasteless but of course, I still tried this one and hoping for something interesting might possibly came out but none so far. No highlights, nothing. Just typical machine gun drumming with occasional useless “intros” and Maranatha influenced mid-paced groove that sounds strange for a Marduk release.

  5. MEGADETH - Endgame CD (Thrash Metal)

MEGADETH ENDGAMEIt’s been a long time and Megadeth is finally back on track with Endgame, the band’s most recent album (2009). Simply put, this album just blows Death Magnetic away - as if someone can’t really help of not mentioning that one. Not only that the production is a thousand times better than Death Magnetic, the songs, were almost a leap and the shredding solos proves that Megadeth is NOT “a watered down Metallica”!

  6. REBIRTH - The Process Of Obliteration CDR (Metal)

REBIRTHStrange thing to have this promo CDR. First track enters the room with some heavy sounding guitars and groovy drums, or call it catchy since groovy is a sin here. Harmonics shines here and there. Not so convinced with these guitars since the entire song sounds like a mix between Thrash and Hardcore, and I for one never like such a combination.

  7. DOG - The Skullection CDR (Black Metal)

DOGThis is bad. Just one of the bad demos coming out nowadays. DOG is a “side project” of some Hungarians who are also involved in Marblebog (already reviewed by one of the writers here I think). This one is their baby and that baby is ugly. Not ugly in a sense of musical terror but ugly in a sense of being bad. No way to understand what’s going on here. The first five tracks were written in Hungarian(?) titles. The drum machine (I’m thinking it is) is horrible. The guitars are weak. Those three, ok make it two, factors simply made this as the worst demos I’ve ever heard!

  8. DEVASTATOR - Morbid Force CD (Thrash/Black Metal)

CD starts with some punctured pipe echoing with a deep breathing voice, I’m fine with that. You know all these time consuming “intros” in every album you bought before the real song kicks in? Add this one on the list. Second track breaks loose, I suppose to say that was good. Raw guitars and production fitting this kind of “music”. Old School 80’s worship is the game of these devastating motherfuckers. But wait, I think I got myself a situation!

  9. LEGIONS OF WAR - Towards Death CD (Black/Thrash Metal)

LEGIONS OF WARLegions of War hails from Sweden. This time is not the usual ‘religious’ metal that’s seems to be over populating Sweden but Thrashing Black Metal that is (still) made in Sweden. I suppose of not saying Sweden over and over again, but what can you do?! The music is obviously Swedish sounding, so?! The production is raw, lo-fi but everything is audibly heard - you know the basic, Swedes guys knows best on what they’re doing (ie: tweaking)…

  10. DESTROYER 666 - Defiance CD (Death/Black Metal)

DESTROYER 666 DefianceHailing from Australia (very confusing, alright), the initiators of Epic Death Metal returns with the new album for 2009, simply called “Defiance”. First off, I’ve been reading a lot of unfavorable opinions regarding this release. The internet makes this world so small, so reading a mixbag of opinions before an actual CD came out is already a normal thing in today’s scene. This one is not an exception…
