Finnish Black Metal purveyors, Beherit, announced that they are coming back several months (or maybe a year) before “Engram” went out. That alone makes a huge stir in the so-called underground, especially in the message board where one will say yes and others will simply follow. With all of the speculations, it was even thought as a “rumor” and later it went on silence. Too many surprises, this band is so dramatic.
So yes, “Engram” strokes the underground, mainly the bestial-black-filth hordes. Some people just can’t believe that there’s a new Beherit, they almost died upon hearing the news while some were in tears knowing that they now can get a new album of the band they’ve been worshipping/copying for almost a decade! So the dudes from Spinefarm mark this release for 17 EURO and people never care. It even climbed up the Finnish charts just like Nightwish did, isn’t that amazing?!
Right now we’re about to take a deeper look on this record. “Engram” is a half good/half bad album. I’m not even interested pointing out that this is the “Album of the Year” like what all of the fanboys did. The fact that “Engram” looses its charm upon repeated listening. Yes, I don’t like saying this but after a couple of spin the album (and songs) simply gets boring and boring. Maybe the beast in Beherit is not there anymore, huh!
The production is great, no complains about that at all. Others claim that this is “too clean” for Beherit, well what do I know… maybe that is because it’s 2009 already and not 1995, you fucktard! Holocausto’s insane voice is still there, specially in “All in Satan”. Damn, that is so crisp! Thanks to the production that a lot of purists never liked! To anyone having doubts buying this album just because a few sheep claimed that the sound is so clean and boring, then fear not because this is still Beherit.
It seems that this sounds to be like a great record huh?! Well guess again because I got a lot of drawbacks to tell and this is where you should read back what I’ve said in the third paragraph. First, the aggression is lost. I’m not expecting another “Oath of Black Blood” here but the sloppy solos are gone and we’re stuck with all these bland riffs that simply fell to the wayside. Second, the clean wailing voice is so annoying! Haha, I have no idea why it is being use and they use it even so often! Third, there are only two great tracks and the rest were pure fucking filler useless tracks.
So here is my top favorite “All in Satan”. I’m sure that any Beherit-worshippin-gasmask-wearin-goatkultist will also do. “Suck my Blood” is fine but not as good as “All in Satan” and it’s not as bad as the other useless tracks in the album. The Bathory cloning done in the rest of the tracks were so terribly groovy, I almost enjoyed it by foot tapping. Great bass sound from this album though. Anyway… yes, you got two tracks for 17 EURO and this is up for you to decide. If you can stomach these filler tracks, then that’s great, but if not only for the voice – this album will really go down the drain.
